New Portsmouth and Southampton City Deal worth £953 announced
The UK government has just revealed the new City Deal for Portsmouth and Southampton yesterday, under which it will will provide £953m of investment into the areas, create 17,000 jobs and set up the new £5.8m Solent Jobs Pilot, a joint investment proposal to help 1,000 long-term unemployed people.
According to a new report in the local business media, the deal will also unlock two high-profile sites within Southampton and Portsmouth. Basically, the Ministry of Defence will transfer its sites on Tipner-Horsea Island to Portsmouth City Council to open up £831m of private and public sector investment, while £7m from the Regional Growth Fund will be used to unlock the Watermark West Quay site in Southampton, which will lead to £90m of private sector investment.
Furthermore, the deal will also include a Skills Investment Strategy and Skills for Growth Fund to support the development of local skills.
Other allocated funding will include; a £1m DWP Rapid Response Service to support redundant employees; a £3m Marine and Maritime Employer Ownership for Skills Programme; a £1.4m Young Person’s Fund to support national youth unemployment programmes; and a £10m programme to support SME growth.
