New jobs created after builders’ merchant opens new depot

A company that supplies materials for the building industry has managed to expand its team and purchase a third depot after securing a loan from NatWest, a recent news report in the local business media was able to reveal.

South Coast Building Supplies was formed in August 2008 when owner Gary Ellis bought it out of administration, saving jobs and two depots. The firm has now bought and redeveloped a former car showroom and forecourt in Winchester Road, Southampton, almost doubling its workforce in the process, up to 40.

Owner Gary Ellis said: "We wanted to buy premises for our third site rather than rent, as the rent we would be paying would probably be significantly higher than the interest on the capital payments of this mortgage.

"The idea is not to build the business up to five or six branches and sell out, but to build it up to that stage and keep it going. This is the story of a business saved during the recession and which we are continuing to grow."
