Two well-known gym chains, Guildford-based The Gym Group and Pure Gym, will merge in order to take advantage of growing membership at fitness clubs and booming consumer demand for low-fee health and fitness club memberships, a news report in the local business media has revealed.

The future merger will further strengthen the customer proposition offered by both companies, extending the number of gyms available to both new and existing members. Moreover, this move would also help the future gym giant grow its network of gym locations at a very fast pace.

As part of the merger agreement, Peter Roberts of Pure Gym will become executive chairman of the new group, while The Gym Group chief executive John Treharne will take on the same role in the enlarged business.

"This agreed deal unites two innovative players in the fast-changing gyms sector, where the low-priced model is improving consumer choice and contributing to better exercise levels across the country," said Peter Roberts, who founded Ripon-headquartered Pure Gym in 2009.

"We expect our complementary brands and locations to encourage even more people to join gyms."

Gym Group chief executive John Treharne added: "Customers want total flexibility and value-for-money options when it comes to keeping fit. This enlarged business, combining great facilities and excellent trainers, will provide a compelling alternative to existing gym providers."
