Plans for centre of Woking overhaul to be revealed

Plans for a massive overhaul of the centre of Woking, that will see a large part of Victoria Square redeveloped, are about to go on display, a news report on the matter has revealed.

Bandstand Square Developments, a joint venture between Peacocks Shopping Centre owner Moyallen, Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council, hopes to get the green light to build a new civic space entitled Victoria Square on the site of Bandstand Square, Woking Fire Station and the former home of Woking Market.

Under the scheme, 125,000 sq ft of new retail space will be created in the heart of the town. A Marks & Spencer store will anchor the development, but there will also be a new Boots store, a four-star hotel, two new public plazas, a spa, a gym, apartments and additional parking.

Councillor David Hodge, leader of Surrey County Council, said: "The development plans for Woking are part of the county council’s long-term priorities to support the economy of Surrey, improve services for residents and provide local jobs for local people."

The plans will be showcased at a public exhibition on 12 September 2013, and will remain on display until 27 September 2013.
