Tackling the South East’s housing crisis could create up to 8,000 new full-time jobs

Creating a comprehensive programme designed to tackle the housing crisis across the South East could lead to a £440m boost to the region’s economy as well as create more than 8,000 full-time jobs, the National Housing Federation has claimed recently.

The South East needs to build 8,700 affordable homes per year to keep pace with demand, representatives for the organization said.

The South East Local Enterprise Partnership’s (LEP) area, which covers Essex, Kent and West Sussex, would benefit from an annual cash injection of £265m into the local economy if enough affordable homes were built to meet local demand.

Building more affordable homes in this area would support more than 5,000 jobs by creating employment opportunities and also keeping people in work.

Alistair Smyth, South East Manager at the National Housing Federation, said: "There are simply not enough affordable homes being built in the South East; people across the region are struggling to find the homes they need at a price they can afford. Not building the homes we’re going to need represents a failing of generations to come, and a missed opportunity today.

"The numbers show that new homes are more than roofs over heads; they bring wealth to local areas and improve job prospects. That’s why we’re asking that politicians commit to ending the housing crisis within a generation by building more homes now."
